THE COPENHAGEN SESSIONS
They Shoot Music Don't They has a new temporary home! For three months we will meet bands in Copenhagen and film offstage session in the autumnal darkness of the Danish capital, inviting international and Danish, upcoming and acclaimed bands to play in front of our camera. The locations are bike sheds, abandoned shopping malls, industrial buildings, cafés, parks or just streets. Join us on an adventurous tour through Copenhagen beyond it's picture-perfect-idyll and check out our newest Copenhagen Session every week on these pages!

When Saints Go Machine
We haven’t even locked our bikes when we hear the first beats of „Parix“ coming from the backyard of a non-descript, slightly run-down brick building in Nørrebro. The Copenhagen-based When Saints Go Machine have their rehearsal room back there and are obviously already getting warm for the session. It’s not the first time our paths cross, two years back we put the four guys in a Viennese shop window for a take of their song Fail Fo...more ...

I Got You On Tape
It’s one week before Christmas, a jazzy version of “Jingle Bells“ is playing on the stereo and CafĂ© Intime is full of sparkling Christmas tree balls hanging from all over the ceiling. Jacob Bellens, the singer of the Copenhagen-based I Got You On Tape takes his seat at the grand piano right when the first guests of the day come into the bar. Lars, the owner of CafĂ© Intime, has opened a bit earlier for us, but even though we are still bef...more ...

Wild Beasts
2011 was a very good year for Wild Beasts. Their latest album “Smother” ranked high on almost any Best-Of list and a huge tour saw them play everywhere from Australia to Turkey to Mexico. The show in Copenhagen in December is the last of the tour and year, the flight back to the UK is booked for the next morning. We lead Tom and Hayden into the freight elevator that is normally used to get gear up to the main stage. The acoustics is amazing in...more ...

Figurines
It is quite a long way out to Figurines’ rehearsal space. We cycle past old and new industrial buildings in Copenhagen’s Valby district until we find the address we are looking for a in a small backyard behind a car parking. Singer Christian welcomes us and opens the hidden door to their rehearsal room. In the narrow corridor leading to the practise space Jens sets up his keyboard underneath a shelf. Drummer Claus does some skatebo...more ...

WhoMadeWho
Jeppe is sitting on the trash can in front of his house in Valby when we arrive. The guitarist and singer of WhoMadeWho strums his guitar and waves as he sees us coming around the corner. He invited us to his place – or better: to the greenhouse in his garden – in a rather suburban neighbourhood full of single-family houses for this session. After looking for some lamp to light the greenhouse and an extension cord for the bass amp Jeppe moves ...more ...

Widowspeak
It’s birthday time! Widowspeak’s drummer Michael is turning 23 on the day we meet them at KB18, a small venue in Copenhagen’s meatpacking district. There’s birthday cake and pizza backstage, but we leave the cosy, candlelit and – above all – warm room to head out into the “meat city”, a quickly developing area in Vesterbro with a lot of cultural businesses and venues, but also still quite some meat industry ...more ...

Teitur
“Home, always gonna feel at home, no matter where I may roam”, Teitur sings in his room in Copenhagen. Initially we had planned to meet up with the Faroese songwriter at his place in Amagerbrogade and then head to another location close-by to do the recordings. But once arrived in the cosy apartment that he shares with a young family (you can hear the baby cry in the background occasionally) we decided to stay and take the chance to film an ex...more ...

The Raveonettes
Hometown shows are always something special, particularly for bands who have been touring all over the world. It is quite a rare occasion for us to meet Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo where it all started for them, in Copenhagen, right before their final show of the tour and the year. They are concentrating and preparing their set when we arrive at the Vega venue in the afternoon. Time is limited and outdoor temperatures are as you would imag...more ...

Slow Club
December in Scandinavia can be tough, not only for the long darkness but also for the freezing temperatures. Nevertheless the Sheffield-based Slow Club are brave enough to go for an outdoor acoustic session the morning after their show in Copenhagen. We meet Rebecca and Charles in their hotel in Vesterbro and take them for a short walk through the neighbourhood towards The Lakes, a popular recreational area close to the city center, that is fi...more ...

Kaiser Chiefs
It must be still morning for Kaiser Chiefs when we arrive at Amager Bio – the venue of their Copenhagen show – at 2 pm on a greyish day in late November. The first one to appear is singer Ricky with a wake-up coffee from the „world’s best mug“ in his hand. „Where is everybody?“, he asks, looking at the empty back of their tour truck, their chosen location for this acoustic session. A few minutes later all five Kaiser Chiefs are present a...more ...

Ganglians
“Let’s go to the town!”, drummer Alex Sowles says in the backstage room of the Loppen venue in Copenhagen. „The town“ in this case is Christianshavn, the neighbourhood around the club, with some nice canals, quiet cobbled streets and cosy bars. One of them, Eiffel Bar, is where we’re heading at for doing an animated session with California-based Ganglians. After ordering a couple of beers the four guys set up their gear...more ...

Cody
Meeting locals in a foreign city has many pleasant sides, but certainly one of them is getting to know great places that are not featured in the travel guide of your choice. Our session with the Copenhagen-based 7-piece band Cody is one of those occasions. They invite us to a huge, abandoned industrial building in the area of the former Carlsberg brewery, and in fact the place is so fantastic that it’s difficult to decide where to actual...more ...

The War On Drugs
The Loppen club in Christiania is already filling with people when we head out with The War On Drugs to do a little offstage recording. A location inside the anarchist freetown is tempting, but they’re not too happy about cameras there, and it’s also – in the absence of any street lights – completely dark. So we cross the street and walk into the backyard of Christianshavn School, where the gate is still open and a decently lit woo...more ...

Craft Spells
Copenhagen Sessions, here we go! We have temporarily left Vienna and moved a bit further north to explore the Danish capital, which welcomes us with a rather adventurous opening session. It’s a cool October evening and we pick up the Seattle-based Craft Spells at the Vega venue after their soundcheck. What was initially the bedroom project of the young Californian Justin Vallesteros is now a full band on their first Europe tour, having c...more ...
