Coin-operated 24-hour launderettes are fugitive places. Nobody would consciously decide to spend some time there if one didn’t have to. And even if the quiet, monotonous sound of the washing machines could be an adequate background buzz for taking a short break from everyday duties – maybe reading a newspaper or some pages of a book – most people leave and do the shopping while their laundry rotates in the washing drum. Vienna is not the kind of city where one can find a launderette on every corner, yet there are some – especially in the more multicultural parts of the town where not every household is equipped with own laundry facilities. Tiled floors, vintage washing machines and often a constant stream of crappy music from the radio definitely belong to the standard launderette experience. All of this applies to the Schnell & Sauber (fast & clean) launderette in Schönbrunner Straße 103 in Vienna’s fifth district.
