It’s pre-Christmas time in Vienna, sweet and alcoholic flavour from hot spiced wine stands is in the air, shoppers struggle en masse through Mariahilferstraße, the biggest shopping street in town, and between all this commercialized hustle and bustle and the traditional punch-drinking a different excess appears on the horizon.


“No force on earth can stop one hundred Santas!”is the motto of Santacon or Santarchy – an annual flashmob-invasion of people dressed in Santa Claus costumes, that ramble the streets of Vienna and many other cities around the world. What started in the 1990’s in San Francisco is by now a global phenomenon of alternate Santas singing naughty Christmas carols and thus cheerfully and bawdily messing up pre-Christmas customs.


Having this wassail coincide with the German Psytrash-Techno phenomenon HGich.T, who are currently in town for their theatre-performance at brut, is a match either made in hell or heaven. It is hard, if not impossible to intellectually catch hold of the artist collective HGich.T and thus re-enact their success story. At least in the German speaking world their lyrics between dada-nonsense, psychedelic-craziness as well as radical humour and subversion paired with cheap and rough beats has created a real cult surrounding their numerous, maximum credible trash music videos on YouTube and their excessive live-performances. An act that is performing in the most different settings – at classy Indiepop festivals, theatres, within art societies and survivals or whippersnappers of the Rave and Goa community – and represents parody for the one and the essence for the other, can just be summarized as a phenomenon; either loved or hated.
